The Complete Weekend on the Rocks Night 3

This is a very good but not quite great show. PIG and YOU NEVER KNOW make for an awesome one-two punch. The former is absolute peak DMB, with everyone firing on all cylinders, and the latter would be right there with it if not for a slight vocal wobble. STAND UP is a great performance of an otherwise middling (at best) song. LIE IN is a great performance, vintage Boyd and DMB, although Butch drags it out a bit. #41 is outstanding until the Everyday outro, my hatred of which is well documented. HALLOWEEN is an exciting mid-set addition, although not particularly noteworthy performance-wise. BUTTERFLY is an interesting kernel, but it doesn't go anywhere; looking back, it's the start of Dave's "little songs" trend. Starting with CRUSH it feels like the band hit a wall energy-wise; there's nothing wrong with that song except that it doesn't reach its typical highs. From RAPUNZEL through WATCHTOWER, on the other hand, everything feels so labored (and in the case of LOUISIANA, Boyd gets progressively worse as the song goes on). PIG, YOU NEVER KNOW, LIE IN, and #41 are so compelling, but they aren't enough to raise the rating.
